Hanami Sushi: the feed was live more than a year before the doors opened

The Instagram account went live in January 2025. The restaurant opened in April 2026. In between, the feed ran on behind-the-scenes video of the build, so by opening night there was already an audience to tell.

The verified numbers

  • About 2.6 million views across 146 reels, read 26 Aug 2026
  • 5,887 Instagram followers, public count, 26 Aug 2026
  • 167 posts since 25 January 2025, 146 of them reels, about 1.8 reels a week
  • Highest reel about 1.2 million views; middle reel about 4,200
  • Instagram account live January 2025, restaurant opened April 2026

Counts read from the public Hanami Sushi Instagram profile and its reels grid on 26 August 2026. Instagram rounds view counts above 10,000, so view totals are approximate. First post 25 January 2025; restaurant opened April 2026.

The situation

Most restaurants call a marketing company in the last few weeks before opening, when the sign is up, the staff is hired and most of the money is already spent. Hanami Sushi started earlier. The Instagram account was live in January 2025 and the doors did not open until April 2026, so for more than a year the feed had to carry a restaurant that nobody could visit yet.

That is a harder brief than it sounds. There is no dining room full of people to film, no line at the door, no regulars to feature. It is also the lowest pressure a restaurant account will ever have. Everything posted in that window is practice, and practice is cheap when there is no Friday night service riding on it.

The play

We treated the build itself as the content. Behind-the-scenes short-form video, filmed on site and in person, on a steady cadence rather than one big batch a few weeks out. The camera pointed at whatever was actually happening that week: the room taking shape, the chandelier going up, the kumiko wood-lattice screens being fitted, the food being tested, the people who would be behind the counter. Every clip was cut for a phone held upright and posted on a schedule, so the account never went quiet for long.

We also kept it a real account rather than a countdown. A feed that only posts opening soon gives somebody one reason to follow and one date to forget. A feed that shows food, faces and a room coming together gives them a reason to keep watching every week, which is what a follow is actually worth.

None of that is clever. It is the same short-form routine we run for every restaurant, started early and not skipped.

What happened

As of 26 August 2026 the account had published 167 posts, 146 of them reels, and those reels had earned about 2.6 million views between them. The public follower count was 5,887.

The spread matters more than the total. One reel reached about 1.2 million views. Take that one out entirely and the other 145 reels still earned about 1.4 million between them, with the middle reel at roughly 4,200 views. That is a feed reaching well past its own follower count on an ordinary week, not only on the one that went big.

Across 19 months that is about 1.8 reels a week, held right through a construction project without a gap. And most of that audience was built before there was anything to sell. The restaurant did not open and then go looking for an audience. It opened with one already in place, on the platform where people in Sarasota decide where to eat.

Why it worked

The lesson here is about timing, not tactics. An audience is the one thing you cannot order in the week you open. Signage, staff, menus and ads can all be bought on a deadline. Attention cannot. It accumulates slowly, and it accumulates whether or not you have anything to sell yet.

So if you are opening a restaurant, the cheapest marketing decision available to you is to start filming before you have a single customer. The build is content. The recipe testing is content. The empty room with the afternoon light in it is content. None of it needs a finished product, and all of it is compounding while you wait on permits, contractors and inspections.

The expensive version is the one most owners pick by default: open first, start the account second, and then spend the hardest months of the year paying for reach that could have been earned for free while the space was still a construction site.
